Lost motherland and freedom

The lecture of Rustem Ablatif was devoted to the Russian annexation of Crimea. "We lost our motherland and freedom" was a sad impression that launched his speech.

By taking the Crimean peninsula, Russia infringed the Budapest Memorandum. That was the first step of Moscow's aggression on Ukraine. This resulted in another historical tragedy for Tatars and other peoples sharing the national melting pot of the Crimea.

The brutality of Russia was outstanding. Especially given the fact, that the Tatar national movement's main principle is non-violent struggle. "We have no guns" - R. Ablatif said refering to the popular reaction towards the Russian aggression. Speaking of which, Tatars led by Mustafa Dzhemilev have always supported the Ukrainian national aspirations and the recent Revolution of Dignity that took place on Euromaidans scattered all over Ukrainian cities. Perhaps this dedication to Ukraine's resistance, resulted in Russian revenge. R. Ablatif gave a few examples. For instance a school for chilren aged 6 to 12 assaulted by 50 Russian special forces rangers or the banned commemoration of Tatars' return to the Crimea on 18 May 2014.

The future is not clear. In R. Ablatif's opinion the current economic measures aren't enough. He's also unsatisfied with Ukraine's reaction. President Petro Poroshenko's lacking the strategy towards the Crimean problem. Tatar feel betrayed by Ukraine.

Answering Adam Reichardt's question concernig the conditions for Crimea's return to Ukraine, R. Ablatif expressed his hopes for the fundamentenal political change in Russia. Otherwise, it seems to be impossible.
